- Scope & Content:
-
Three portraits of Indian ladies from the circle of Lady Eliza Jane D’Oyly in Patna 1820-30.
Portraits on ivory of ladies were a speciality of the Patna and Delhi schools in the early 19th century. The Patna artists Lallji and his son Hulas Lal were both in Delhi in 1815 (M. Archer and T. Falk, ‘India Revealed: the art and adventures of James and William Fraser 1801-35’, London 1989, pp. 37-8), Lallji claiming to have met Zoffany, but had returned to Patna by the time of Bishop Heber’s visit in 1824 (R. Heber, ‘Narrative of a journey through the Upper Provinces of India’, London, 1828, vol. 1, pp. 285-87). It is also evident from the various publications of the Behar Amateur Lithographic Press (1828-30) that Lady Eliza Jane D’Oyly also drew Indian ladies in the same style from life (see especially her work in the Macnabb scrapbook album P2481), the intermediaries possibly being the artists Jai Ram Das and Shiv Dayal who helped Sir Charles D’Oyly with the press.
