Add.Or.5358-5361
Four pages from a notebook containing drawings of Thai types and occupations.
By a Thai artist at Ligor [Nagor Si Thammarat], c.1830.
Water-colour with touches of body-colour; 18 by 21.5 cm.
Purchased 2001.
Note: The drawings come from a period just after Thailand had been exposed to British influence from India and the East India Company. In 1822 the Company had sent a mission led by John Crawfurd to Bangkok, with George Finlayson who both made drawings himself and commissioned and acquired others, while in 1825 Henry Burney visited Ligor in the extreme south of Thailand on the Kra peninsula at a time of increased tension between the British in Penang and the Raja of Ligor who was actively planning the annexation of the northern Malay states. A treaty established Keddah as a buffer state between the British in Penang and the Thai kingdom.
