Album of 93 watercolours of trades and occupations from south India with French inscriptions.
South India/Pondicherry style, 1780s.
Water-colour and body-colour. The drawings are bond in an album 24.5 by 18.75 cm, boards with marbled paper covers, and a leather spine lettered: ‘Collection de figures.’ Drawings on laid paper 23.5 by 18cm.
Inscribed on flyleaf: ‘Costume des peuples du Malabar suivant leur differentes proffesions. Ces peintures ont estté faite au Malabar par un habitant du pays.’

Note: The subjects of the drawings are depicted within frames (sometimes emerging from them) of differing sizes in yellow and red, with decorated spandrels. The line and colouring are crude but vigorous. Good for textile patterns and costumes in general. Non-priestly Hindus wear the wide Maratha turban, but various pieces of evidence link it to Pondicherry. Variously inscribed, sometimes twice, in French below in three different hands, one that of the flyleaf inscription (A). Hand B is much less literate and often guesses at the correct spelling of sounds. The word ‘‘more’’ in various spellings (including ‘moresse’) is used indifferently of Hindus and Muslims.
At the end of the volume are bound in four contemporary documents, in Bengali, Persian, French (dated 10 August 1783) and English regarding the sale of the slave girls Letchaumy (Laksmi) of Mayavaram and Jibny of Calcutta, both 12 years of age, together with a chart with the letters of the Tamil alphabet. Their relevance to the album is not clear, although their general ambience is the French enclave in south India.
