Part of a scroll painting cut into seven sections illustrating the Santal clans, Baghut bonga and the Santal creation story.

By Madhu Citrakar of village Pipla, Gaichand circle, Jamtara subdivision, Santal Parganas district, Bihar, c.1930.

Water-colour; width 205 mm.

Collected by W.G. Archer, 1945. Purchased 1974.

Note: Interpretations by Laku Citrakar, brother of the artist. On the general condition of citrakars, Laku stated that he paid five rupees a year as rent for a piece of land and earned a pound or two of rice a day from his work as a jadupatua. Besides his brother (the artist of the scroll) their father also painted.
