Sixteen paintings illustrating: (a) twelve religious or mythological subjects (b) four scenes of current Calcutta life.
By a patua, Kalighat, c.1865.
Inscribed with numbers and titles in English.
Water-colour and silver paint with, in many cases, lithographed outlines; various
sizes.
Deposited c.1871, together with Add.Or.901 and 908-19.
Note: These pictures were originally in a green portfolio and were mounted on card bearing a circular exhibition label: ‘C/INDIA/Bengal/Class I Heading I/no 216.’
All have identical captions in English, neatly written by the same hand and serial numbers - the lowest ‘1’, the highest ‘76’. Since ‘eighty common pictures executed by natives in the Calcutta bazaar’ are listed under Section C in the Catalogue of the London International Exhibition of 1871 and no serial number on the present pictures exceeds 80, it seems reasonably certain that the present pictures formed part of this exhibit and were later deposited in the India Office Library. The pictures were probably painted a few years before the exhibition. For a comparable series of similar date in the Victoria and Albert Museum with the same minute finish, deft precision and control of subtly rounded forms, see W.G. Archer (1971), 49-51, cat. no.5.
