Add.Or.3353-3354
Two paintings illustrating: (a) a religious subject (b) an episode from the Tarakesvar murder.
By Nibaran Chandra Ghosh, Kalighat, c.1880.
Line drawings in black with plain backgrounds; varying sizes.
Obtained by W.G. Archer in Calcutta in 1932 from Mukul Dey, then Principal, Government School of Art, Calcutta, who had purchased them from the artist, Nibaran Chandra Ghosh (c.1835-1930), at Kalighat in about 1920. Purchased 1974.
Note: From the same series as Victoria and Albert Museum series no.18 (catalogued W.G. Archer (1971), 62). Dated to c.1880 on account of a recourse to summary outlines. The inclusion in the series of an episode from the Tarakesvar murder case precludes a date earlier than 1875.
