These drawings were purchased by W.G. Archer in August 1938 from a woman pan-seller at Ghum, a small township near Darjeeling. They were made, she said, by her husband who had also made the wood-block for the borders. She added the following comments: ‘Such pictures are made by Brahmins, whether priests or ordinary Brahmins like my husband. They are sold for alms. All Hindus buy them and paste them on their doors to keep out illness and evil spirits. The pictures are made once a year for the Naga puja at the beginning of August. On that day sweets and flowers are put in the temple for Naga. The picture is of the Naga Raja who eats all other snakes. The snake in the picture is always the same, but the things round the side can vary. Others could have been put in - an elephant or a cow - but there was no room, and it would have taken too much time. The sprite has wiggly legs to show she lives in water. Some water-sprites are good and some bad’.
Four magic diagrams made for Naga Puja to protect the household from snake bite, illness and misfortune.
By a Brahmin of Ghum, Darjeeling district, Bengal, c.1938.
Acquired by W.G. Archer in Ghum, August 1938.
Presented by Mildred and W.G. Archer, November 1962.
