LEBRUN, ANDRÉ-JEAN (1737-1811), attributed to

F856-857
Portrait medallions of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antionette of France, c.1776.
Gilt bronze on marble, with gilt bronze swags and leaf sprays.
Each with its own Koran bag, printed and embroidered south Indian textiles.
These portraits were (presumably) presented to Haidar ‘Ali Sultan of Mysore when his ambassadors were at the court of Louis XVI in 1775, seeking help against the English (or possibly whem Tipu's ambassadors were in Paris in 1787?), and were found in the palace of Seringapatam in 1799. They were brought back to England by Lieut.-Colonel John Richardson and presented to the East India Company. For comparable examples see the pair in the Wallace Collection (S. Spencer-Longhurst, 'Craftsmanship of the Ancien Régime', Apollo, Nov. 1982, vol. CXVI, no. 249). For an amusing if inaccurate account of the Mysore ambassadors' visit, see the Memoirs of Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun (trans. Siân Evans), pp.29-30.
