F1037-1040
Four terracotta models of a Brahmin and of occupations.
From the studio of Jadunath Pal, Krishnanagar, c. 1850-60.
Polychrome terracotta, wood, cloth and hair.
Purchased 2002.
Note: ‘Jadu Nath Pal, his brother Ram Lal Pal, his nephew Bakkeswar Pal, and his relation and neighbour Rakhal Das Pal are now the only four clay modellers of note at Krishnanagar ... There is considerable delicacy and fineness in their work; the figures are instinct with life and expression, and their pose and action are excellent’ (T. Mookarji, ‘The Art Manufactures of India’, Calcutta, 1888, pp. 59ff.). These four figures are especially sensitively modelled. Models of tradesmen and occupations seem to be a spin-off in Krishnanagar from the clay models of divinities much used in worship in Bengal. The models were first brought to the west for the Great Exhibition of 1851, both as sets of occupations, and as scenes (indigo farm, Judge’s court and the like), and most later 19th century trade exhibitions included such figures, some of them life size. They are clothed in miniature cloth garments, and have real hair attached.
