Eighteen drawings of Sinhalese spirit dancers or ‘Sanni Yaksas’ and one of a ‘Devatava’. All inscribed: ‘Galle Novr. 1885. Del: B.M. Armstrong’ and title of character represented.

Water-colour; 25.4 by 21.2 cm.

Presented by Mr. A.C. Prideaux, 1972, together with MSS Sinh F1.

Note: The paintings were commissioned by Mr. H.C.P. Bell (1851-1937), grandfather of the donor. From a note in MSS Sinh F1 it seems the drawings were intended to illustrate an article for the ‘Ceylon Antiquary’. Bell was a member of the Ceylon Civil Service from 1873 to 1912.
