Bengal Army. Cadet 1777, Bengal Infantry. Transferred to Engineers 1778; Lieutenant 1781. Surveyed west bank of the Hooghly below Rupnarayan river 1779 and Colgong and lowlands between Rajmahal hills and Ganges 1782. On furlough without pay 1785, until his resignation in 1788. Appointed Secretary to the Free School Society until his death. Started the ‘Calcutta Chronicle’ as a weekly paper, 1786. Published ‘Twelve views of Calcutta’, Calcutta, 1794.

Three drawings of the ancient city of Gaur, possibly originals for his Picturesque ruins at Gour etc., advertised in the Calcutta Gazette, 6 December 1798: ‘The set of .eight views of the ruins of Gour and Rajmehal for which proposals were made in 1797 is completed; and copies may be had at fifty rupees (the subscription price) on applying to Mr. Baillie at No. 13 Chitpre Road. The size of the views is 16 inches by 11½, including a border, and they are executed in the manner of stained drawings’. These prints are unknown.
