BELLASIS, GEORGE HUTCHINS (1807-1862)

Second son of George Hutchins Bellasis (1778-1822) and younger brother of John Brownrigg Bellasis. His parents were both enthusiastic sketchers and six of his father’s drawings were published as coloured aquatints in ‘Views of St. Helena’ (London, 1815). He served in the Bombay Native Infantry from 1826 to 1853 and had an uneventful career with much ill health. He became a Lieutenant in 1832 and Captain in 1842. He went on leave to England in 1843 and married Fanny Skelton, returning in 1845. From 31 January 1851 he was on sick leave in the Nilgiri Hills and was permitted to retire from service on the pension of a Major on 30 August 1853. He appears to have spent his last months in India at Satara.
