BELLASIS, JOHN BROWNRIGG (1806-1890)
Eldest son of George Hutchins Bellasis (1778-1822) and Charlotte Maude; cousin of A.F. Bellasis. Served with Bombay Army in W. India and the Deccan 1822 to 1858. From 1825 until 1836 he acted as interpreter in Hindustani and Marathi and was adjutant to the Broach detachment. In 1837 he joined the Revenue Survey in the Deccan and in 1838 officiated for Alexander Nash while the latter was in Poona. In 1840 he went on leave to England until November 1842 and married Louisa Eames. In 1844 he was appointed to the command of the Gujerat Provincial Battalion. He became commandant of the 9th Native Infantry in 1856 and in 1848 to 1849 took part in the siege of Multan, chiefly guarding the battery. In 1852 he again went on leave to Europe and in July 1858 retired with the rank of Major-General to Holly Hill, Bowness, in Westmorland.
