BOURNE, Lady HEATHER FRANCES (b.1898)

Eldest daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel F.W. Burbury, Rifle Brigade, of Barnsley, Yorkshire. Studied drawing under John Hassall. Arrived India 1916 to join her parents at Agra and married Captain, later Sir, Frederick Chalmers Bourne in 1918, at Gulmarg. After leaving the army Bourne joined the ICS, returning to India in 1920 and served in the Punjab, Central Provinces and Assam. Appointed Governor of Central Provinces and Berar during period of Independence and Governor of East Bengal 1947-50. Details of the personal and official life of the Bournes are given in note form at the front of each sketch book.
