Born Birmingham. Studied at local art school and Royal College of Art, ARCA 1898. Indian Education Service 1899-1927. Principal of the Mayo School of Art and Curator of Lahore Museum 1899-1909; Principal of the Government School of Art, Calcutta 1909-27. Assistant Director, Art Exhibition, Delhi Durbar 1902-3; Officer in charge Art Section and Trustee, Indian Museum 1910; Secretary and Curator, Victoria Memorial Hall, Calcutta 1927-47; Secretary, India Committee, for the Royal Academy Exhibition ‘The Art of India and Pakistan’, 1947-48. Designed Indian coinage reverse, 1911; mural map decoration in the Council Room, Viceroy’s House, New Delhi, 1930. Author of ‘Picturesque Nepal’, London, 1912; ‘Indian Painting,’ Calcutta 1912; ‘Tours in Sikkim’, Calcutta, 1917; ‘Indian painting under the Mughals’, Oxford, 1924; ‘Indian architecture’, Bombay, 1942.
