CANNING, Lady CHARLOTTE ELIZABETH (1817-1861)
Elder daughter of Sir Charles Stuart, later Lord Stuart de Rothesay and Lady Elizabeth, ‘née’ Yorke. Married the Hon. Charles John Canning 1835. Served as Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Victoria from 1842 until her husband’s appointment as Governor-General of India in 1855. Died at Government House in November 1861 from a fever caught returning from Darjeeling and was buried in the grounds of Barrackpore House. A keen amateur artist, particularly during her period with the Queen, who liked momentoes of tours for her albums, Lady Canning’s Indian flower studies were admired by Ruskin. Most of her work is at Harewood House, having passed to the Earl of Harewood through Lord Canning’s sister, Harriet, Marchioness of Clanricade, whose daughter, Lady Elizabeth de Burgh, married Viscount Lascelles in 1845.
