CARPENTER, PERCY (1820-1895)
Son of William Hookham Carpenter, Keeper of Prints and Drawings, British Museum, and Margaret Sarah, ‘née’ Geddes, portrait painter. Brother of William Carpenter, q.v. Entered Royal Academy Painting schools 1838. Exhibited RA 1841-58 and British Institute 1842-51. The original was returned to Singapore in 1953 by the Camberwell Art Gallery in whose possession it had been since 1899. In Kandy, Ceylon 1858 and in Calcutta 1859-60. Commissioned by the Bengal Tent Club to make drawings of a pigsticking meet in March 1860, eight of which were lithographed by E. Walker, published Day and Son, 1861 as ‘Hog Hunting in Lower Bengal’ with an introduction by Carpenter. Died London, occupation being given as sub-librarian at the Foreign Office.
