CARPENTER, WILLIAM (1818-1899)
Born London, professional artist, son of Margaret Sarah, ‘née’ Geddes, portrait painter, and William Hookham Carpenter, Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum. Entered Royal Academy Painting School, December 1836 and exhibited at the RA 1840-66. Visited India via Ceylon from 1850-6, travelled to the Punjab, Kashmir and North-West Frontier Province; with Punjab Irregular Force 1855. Exhibition of his Indian subjects held at South Kensington 1881. The Victoria and Albert Museum has 275 of his drawings, both landscapes and figures studies. Died Forest Hill, London.
