DURAND, Sir EDWARD LAW, 1st Baronet (1845-1920)

Durand joined the British Army in the 96th Foot in 1865. In 1877 he entered civil employment and from 1878 to 1880 was acting Assistant Resident at Bushire, Persian Gulf. In 1881 he was in Rajputana, in 1882 he was in charge of the ex-Amir Yakub Khan of Kabul and from 1882 to 1884 he served in the N.W. Provinces. During the years 1884 to 1887 he was Assistant Commissioner to the Afghan Boundary Commission led first by Sir Peter Lumsden and after 1885 by Sir West Ridgeway. He ended his service as Resident of Nepal and retired as a Lieutenant-Colonel in 1893.

100 drawings made while Durand was attached to the Afghan Boundary Commission, 1884 to 1886.

WD376-417 made during the journey up to the Russian frontier and the establishment of winter quarters at Bala Murghab; 418-442 on the way to Herat to help prepare its defences against a possible Russian advance, and thence to and from Zulficar; 443-467 during the demarcation of the boundary from Zulficar at the western end to Khamiab on the Oxus; 468-473 belong to the period when the Mission was in the Khamiab region. The drawings are chiefly landscapes but include studies of architecture, tribal people and animals. Certain sketches were reproduced in ‘The Illustrated London News’ of the day.
