ELWON, THOMAS (1793/4-1835)
Bombay Marine. Midshipman 1810; Captain 1832. Commanded the ‘Benares’ which, along with the ‘Palinarus’ took part in a survey of the Red Sea between 1829 and 1834 to establish the best course for steamers travelling to and from Suez. Before completing the southern section from Jiddah to the Straits of Bab-el mandeb for which he was responsible, Elwon was appointed Commodore of the Persian Gulf in 1833. He died at Bassadore.

They were originally from a sketch book inscribed on the first page: ‘Captain Elwon’ and are mostly coastal profiles in pencil with inscriptions, some incomplete through damage.
Various sizes; pencil and water-colour.
Presented by Mr. S.M.E. Haines 1975, along with WD3472-3527 and Photo 424.
