FANE, WALTER (1828-1885)
Born Fulbeck, Lincolnshire, son of Rev. Edward Fane, a relative of Sir Henry Fane, Commander-in-Chief in India 1835-39. Madras Army, Cadet 1844/5. Punjab Irregular Cavalry on the North West Frontier 1849-58. Ordered to raise a regiment of cavalry for service in China 1860, and was present at the capture of Peking. ‘Fane’s Horse’ made regular part of the Army under his command in 1861 and renamed 19th Bengal Cavalry. Retired as Major-General 1879 and died at Fulbeck.
Note: William Simpson mentions in his autobiography staying with Fane in his ‘native house ... in the middle of the town in a street called ... Lal Kooa’ on his arrival in Delhi, 29 December 1859 (p.97). There is an oil portrait of Fane at the National Army Museum.
