FRANCKLIN, WILLIAM (1763-1839)

Francklin joined the E. I. Company’s Bengal Native Infantry in 1783. He was invalided out of the service in 1815 and retired in India in 1825. He became a Major in 1810. He was a keen amateur archaeologist and a member of the Asiatic Society of Bengal. He made a number of translations and contributions to journals such as ‘Asiatick Researches’. He travelled to Persia in 1786 and published ‘Observations made on a tour from Bengal to Persia in the Years 1786-7, with an Account of the Remains of Persepolis’ (Calcutta, 1788). He also published ‘The History of the Reign of Shah Aulum’ (London, 1798), ‘Tracts Political, Geographical and Commercial on the Domains of Ava and the N. W. Parts of Hindostaun’ (London, 1811), ‘Inquiry Concerning the Site of Ancient Palibothra, 1811-1815’ (London, 1815-20) and ‘Researches on the Tenets and Doctrines of the Jeynes and Boodhists’ (London, 1827). In the cold weather of 1810 to 1811 he made a journey from Rajmahal to Gaur in Bengal, his ‘Journal of a Route from Rajemehul to Gour, A.D. 1810-11’ being published in Shillong in 1910.

15 drawings made during Francklin’s visit to Gaur depicting details of the Adina Mosque, Pandua, and the Great Golden Mosque, Gaur (Bengal). 1810-11. Although Dr. Buchanan-Hamilton (q.v.) had described the ruins of Gaur, Francklin’s drawings were more detailed.
