GRANT, DUNCAN JAMES CORROWR (1885-1978)
Artist. Son of Major Bartle Grant (British Army, 8th Hussars) and Ethel Grant (née McNeil, see entry under A.F.P. Harcourt). Major Bartle Grant was a son of Sir John Peter Grant and brother of Lady Strachey (see Strachey Collection). Duncan Grant studied at the Westminster and Slade Schools of Art, and in Italy and Paris. He was an original member of the London Artists’ Association, the Camden Town Group and the London Group. A member of the ‘Bloomsbury set’, he was a close friend of Clive and Vanessa Bell, Leonard and Virginia Woolf, Roger and Margery Fry and Lytton Strachey. During his boyhood, while his parents were in India, Duncan Grant spent much time with the family of Sir Richard and Lady Strachey at 69 Lancaster Gate, London.

When acquired, the drawings were in a folder labelled ‘Duncan’ in the handwriting of Lady Strachey.
Deposited on permanent loan by James Strachey, son of Sir Richard Strachey, 4 November 1964, together with Mss Eur F127 and WD2331-2351.
