JACKSON, WELBY BROWN (1802-90)
Born 30 December 1802, at Barking, Essex, son of John Jackson, East India Company Director, and his wife Charlotte Spry. Appointed in the season of 1820, he became a Writer 30 April 1821. After the usual round of minor appointments in Calcutta (1822), Bhagalpur (Register, 1823-25), Purnea (1825) and Murshidabad (1826), he was appointed Judge and Magistrate at Behar (1827-31), Register of the Court of Sudder Dewanny and Nizamut Adawlut at Allahabad (1831), Judge at Benares (1836) and at Gorakhpur (1837). From 1838 he was Commissioner of Revenue and Circuit of the Murshidabad Division, and from 1839 Judge at the Court of Sudder Dewanny and Nizamut Adawlut, Presidency Division, from which he retired in 1854. He married twice: Catherine Hungerford on 10 April 1823 (6 children recorded), and as a widower Maria Margaretta D’Aguilar on 24 July 1839 (2 children recorded). Two of his brothers John (b. 1799) and Colville Coverly (b. 1804) also joined the Company’s civil service in Bengal.
Jackson is one of those figures who appears on the fringe of artistic circles in Calcutta as a pupil of Chinnery, and especially of D’Oyly’s circle in Bihar. He is noted as being among those at a famous party in Calcutta drawn by William Prinsep in 1823 (WD303, f.8). His house at Bhagalpur is recorded by Pyari Lal later in 1823 (Mss Eur C476, f.11). The Prinsep album has one example of his work (WD303, f.36: a galloping horse), which is otherwise known from lithographic prints prepared by D’Oyly and his circle in Patna - see for example P2481, f.32 (two cows resting), and ff. 70v, 102 and 130, lithographs of camels from a sepia drawing and from oil paintings. X294, f.19 has a vignette of camel heads signed ‘Welby Jackson delt C W Smith fecit.’
