KIPLING, JOHN LOCKWOOD (1837-1911)
Lockwood Kipling began life by working as a potter in Staffordshire and then studied art at South Kensington. From 1865 to 1875 he was Architectural Sculptor to the Bombay School of Art, and his son, Rudyard, was born in Bombay in 1865. From 1875 to 1893 he was Principal of the Mayo School of Art, Lahore, and Curator of the Central Museum, Lahore. He published ‘Beast and man in India’ in 1891.

13 drawings. Part of a series illustrating occupations, probably made in the village of Khamgaon, Akola district. February to March 1872. Printed labels describing the occupation are attached below each drawing.
Pencil and wash; 13.75 by 9.5 ins.
Purchased 14 September 1961.
Note: Khamgaon was an important cotton mart and while there Kipling made a series of drawings illustrating the manufacture of cotton which are now in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
