LAYARD, FREDERIC PETER (1818-1891)
Born Bath, son of Henry Peter John Layard, former Judge at Colombo, Ceylon. Bengal Army. Ensign, 19th Bengal Native Infantry 1838; Captain 1851; Major 1862; Colonel with Bengal Staff Corps 1864; General 1889. Served in Sind under General Sir Charles Napier, 1842-3. Despatched by Major Outram on a special Political Mission to Dera Ghazi Khan in the Cis-Indus Multan territories, 1842. Also served at Ambala. Appointed to the PWDas Officiating Executive Officer at Berhampore, 1846, and rose to be Supervising Engineer, Northern Circle, 1861. Died at St. John's Wood. His 'Line of March of a Bengal Regiment of Infantry in Scinde' was engraved by G.E. Madeley and published by Ackermann.
