LEIGHTON, STANLEY (1837-1901)

Leighton practised as a barrister from 1861 to 1867 and became Conservative Member of Parliament for North Shropshire in 1876. He visited India with a friend, Louis Buxton, from December 1867 to 1869 while making a long tour of the empire. He visited Bombay, Ceylon, Calcutta and then travelled across northern India to Simla. A visit to Rajputana and Central India followed, ending with a Christmas shoot at Mirzapur (U.P.).

In the course of his tour he appears to have met Dr. Henry Cayley (1834-1904) and made copies from his sketches of Ladakh (WD295-302). Cayley was in the Indian Medical Service from 1857 to 1887 and when Leighton met him he had just returned from an expedition to Ladakh which he described in a report 'The route to the Karakash River', 1868.
