LE HARDY, CHARLES FRANCIS (1802-82)
Born in Jersey, the son of Charles Le Hardy (1769-1815), Lt. Col. in the Jersey Militia and Advocate in the Jersey courts and his wife Elizabeth née Couteur. Madras Army 1821 (14th MNI), Lieut. 1824, Captain 1837, Major 1846, retired as Lt. Col. 1853. In 1829 he was posted to the 2nd Battln. Pioneers working in the Nilgiris, and remained there until 1832. First Superintendent of Coorg following the annexation of 1834, he was apparently largely responsible for the introduction of the coffee plantations into Coorg. In 1839 he was commended for his work in suppressing the revolt in the Kanara district. In 1839 he was awarded 5000 Rupees in special recognition of his work in Coorg, but his application for an increase in salary was refused. In 1843 he left Coorg being appointed as Superintendent of the Nagar Division of the Mysore Commission. Leave to Europe 1846.
