LODER, EDWIN (1827-1885)
Son of James Loder of Bath (1784-1860) the sporting painter. Signed horse portraits by Edwin Loder are known, some in an Indian setting. He enlisted in the 62nd Regiment of Foot in 1846, serving mainly in India, and was discharged in 1866 as ‘unfit for further service’. He was obviously present at the quelling of the disturbances at Bassein after the Second Burma War of 1852 and also in Cawnpore in 1857.
---------------------
WD3905-3926
Twenty-two drawings depicting dacoit leaders and others, made during the Bassein unrest, 1853. For an account of the incident see A. Fytche, ‘Burma past and present’, London 1878, pp.229-251.
Purchased 1983.
---------------------
WD4318-4320
Three drawings connected with the events of the Mutiny in Cawnpore, 1857. They closely resemble the lithographs after drawings by Charles Wade Crump, published by Vincent Brooks in 1858, but with significant differences in composition. Loder’s inscriptions duplicate the letterpress in the published set.
Purchased 1993.
