MARRIOTT COLLECTION.
Lieutenant-General William Frederick Marriott was born in Holborn, son of George Wharton Marriott and his wife Anne Selina. Cadet, Bombay Engineers, 1834; attended Royal Engineers Establishment, Chatham 1837. Arrived in India 1838; Lieutenant 1846; Captain 1854; Lieutenant-Colonel 1860; Colonel 1865; Major-General 1870; Lieutenant-General 1877. He was appointed Secretary to the Military Department, Government of Bombay 1861. Died Cairo 1879. He married his wife Frances in 1849 while on furlough in England and they had five children, Frederick Wharton (b.1850), Charles Richardson (b.1852), Edward Frere (b.1854), Reginald Adams (b.1857), Edith Frances (b.1860). Mrs. Marriott died in 1889.
