MENPES, MORTIMER (1855-1938)
Born at Port Adelaide, Australia, on 22nd February, 1855 (see exhibition catalogue: ‘Graphic works by Whistler and his associates,’ Art Gallery of South Australia, 1975), Menpes studied first in Adelaide and then reached London probably in 1875. He studied first under Poynter at South Kensington, and then became a ‘devotee’ of Whistler. He was acclaimed first as a talented young etcher, and his work was exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy 1880-1900. He is perhaps best known for his pictorial illustrations to books with text by others, for which he travelled extensively throughout the world: e.g. ‘Japan’ (1901), ‘The Durbar’ (1903), ‘India’ (1905), ‘China’ (1909), ‘The People of India’ (1910), ‘Delhi and the Durbar’ (1912), as well as for his popularisation of the works of his teacher Whistler. RBA 1885, RI 1897.
