NORTH, MARIANNE (1830-1890)

Born Hastings, daughter of Frederick North, MP. Travelled widely to draw flowers in their natural habitat, to North America, Jamaica and Brazil, 1871; Japan via America, 1875, returning home the following year via the East Indies and Ceylon; Australia and New Zealand, 1880; South Africa, 1882; Chile, 1884. She also painted landscapes such as the group below. She presented her work to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, commissioning the building of the Marianne North Gallery to house the collection. Her autobiography was edited by her sister and published posthumously as ‘Recollections of a happy life’, 2 vols, London, 1892 and ‘Some further recollections of a happy life’, London, 1893. Died Alderley, Gloucestershire.
