Son of Rev. T.W. Peile, educated at Repton and Oriel College, Oxford. Bombay Civil Service, 1856; Under-Secretary to the Bombay Government; Director of Public Instruction, 1869-72; Political Agent to Kathiawar, 1873-78; Member of Famine Commission, 1878-80; Secretary and Acting Chief Secretary, Bombay, 1879-82; Member of Council, Bombay, 1883-86; Vice-Chancellor of Bombay University, 1884-86; Member of Supreme Council, Calcutta, 1886-87, and of the Council of India in London, 1887-1901; C.S.I., 1879, K.C.S.I. 1888. In the intervals of his extremely busy professional life, Peile found time to draw and paint, and was particularly effective with the pencil.
