REEVES, JOHN (1774-1856)
Born West Ham, Essex. Appointed EIC Inspector of tea in China in 1812, first as Assistant, later as Chief Inspector, at Macao and Canton. Naturalist and plant collector, he commissioned Chinese artists to make natural history drawings. Fellow of the Royal and Linnean societies, 1817, and a correspondent of Sir Joseph Banks. Returned to England in 1831. Died Clapham.

WD3810-3819
Drawings, some with accompanying notes in Reeves’ hand, made while Reeves was serving in China. Some of the drawings appear to be keys to paintings, possibly sent back to England, as the notes refer to colours and details of buildings, eg ‘The yellow painted house belongs to the Spanish Company, the green pillared house ... to Mr Matthieson’. Most of the drawings seem to have been produced by a ‘camera obscura’.
Purchased 1980.
