SMITH, MARY AGNES (fl. 1891-1908)

‘Née’ Mackintosh. Second wife of George Smith CIE (1833-1919) whom she married in 1890. He had worked in India from 1854 to 1877 in education and journalism, as editor of The Friend of India, The Calcutta Review and as Indian correspondent of The Times. The present water-colours, made while the Smiths were visiting India, were found amongst the papers of the artist’s stepson, Lieutenant-Colonel Sir James Robert Dunlop-Smith (1858-1921), Private Secretary to the Viceroy, Lord Minto.
