SOLVYNS, FRANS BALTHAZAR (1760-1824)
Born Antwerp. In Calcutta from 1791 to 1804 mainly working on drawings and engravings for ‘A collection of two hundred and fifty coloured etchings descriptive of the manners, costumes and dresses of the Hindoos’, Calcutta, 1799. The work was not a commercial success and a later folio edition published in Paris in 1808-12 fared no better, possibly because neither the rather crude engravings produced by Solvyns, nor the subject matter, appealed to contemporary taste. However his influence on the work of Indian artists working in Calcutta and Murshidabad in the early 19th century was extremely important.
