STRACHEY, JULIA WOODBURN (1791-1846)

Daughter of Major-General William Kirkpatrick of the Bengal Army. Married Edward Strachey (1774-1832), Bengal Civil Service, in India in 1807 or 1808. They returned to England in 1811 and lived for several years at Sutton Court, Somerset. Mother of Sir Richard Strachey (q.v.).

9 pages from a drawing book depicting classical sculpture. The drawings are probably copies from engravings and illustrate a type of instruction current at that time. 1811.

Some drawings inscribed with titles; all dated.

Pencil; 11.75 by 8.5 ins.

Deposited on permanent loan by her grandson, James Strachey, 4 November 1964, together with Mss Eur F127 and WD2331-2347 and 2357-2369.

Note: These drawings, when acquired, were in a folder labelled: ‘Mrs Strachey's’ ‘Drawings (Julia Woodhouse Kirkpatrick’). It is curious that her name should be thus misincribed by the family.
