TANNER, HENRY CHARLES BASKERVILLE (1835-1898)
Tanner entered the Bombay Artillery in 1854 and served in the Persian campaign of 1856 to 1857. In 1859 he married Mary Hogg, sister of General George Hogg, K.C.B. who was also a keen amateur artist. In 1862 he transferred to the Survey of India where he spent the rest of his career. In 1863 to 1864 he served in Sind, in 1871 he went on the Lushai Expedition and in 1878 mapped routes during the second Afghan War. In 1879 he visited Kafiristan and in 1880 surveyed in Gilgit. The years 1882 to 1884 were spent in Sikkim, 1884 to 1887 in Bhutan and 1887 to 1891, when he retired, in the W. Himalayas. He was an expert photographer (becoming photographer to the Government) and a well-known amateur artist, often contributing to exhibitions, such as the 1886 Indian and Colonial Exhibition.
