WALES, JAMES (1747-1795)
Born Peterhead, Aberdeenshire; educated at Marischal College. Exhibited portraits at Society of Artists and Royal Academy 1783-1791. Applied to the EIC for permission to go to India as a portrait painter, arriving Bombay in July 1791. He made at least two visits to Poona, in 1792 and 1795, where he painted portraits of the Maratha Peshwa and his ministers and was befriended by the British Resident, Sir Charles Warre Malet. Wales also made landscapes and engraved a series of plates after his own drawings, published after his death as ‘Twelve views of the Island of Bombay and its vicinity’, London, 1800. Explored and depicted the rock cut temples of Western India at Ellora and Elephanta with twenty- four views later used by the Daniells for ‘Oriental Scenery’, Part V, London, 1804. His wife died in childbirth in May 1795, and Wales caught fever while sketching and died at Thana in November of the same year. His eldest daughter Susanna married Sir Charles Warre Malet in 1799. For papers and correspondence relating to Sir Charles Malet see Mss Eur F149. James Wales’ journal for 1792 is in the Mellon collection.
