WONNACOTT, WILLIAM (1841-1878)
British Army Schoolmaster, HM 8th Regiment of Foot. Married Emily Louisa Short, 1866, who was also appointed as teacher to the regiment. They were first posted to Dublin, then Malta in late 1866, and India from 1868. Emily died in childbirth in 1871, and their two surviving children were sent to England. The regiment was posted to Aden in 1878 for a brief tour of duty en route for England, but Wonnacott died during the passage home and was buried at sea. For family correspondence see Mss Eur C376.

Two drawings made while the regiment was on the march. Wonnacott won several prizes for his water-colours and his letters include references to his drawings.
