WOOD, WILLIAM (fl. 1827-1833)

Wood obtained permission in June 1827 to join his brother George at the Asiatic Lithographic Press in Calcutta, arriving in September 1828 and leaving in February 1830. George was in Cawnpore by 1832, described as Superintendent of the Asiatic Lithographic Press and lithographer to the King of Oudh, and later worked as a customs officer. A set of 28 lithographs after William Wood’s drawings, ‘Panoramic views of Calcutta’, was published in 1833, with his father, William Wood (1774-1857) zoologist, surgeon and bookseller in the Strand from 1815, listed as one of the publishers. William junior appears to have done almost all the lithography for the series, only the first four being unsigned.
