PRINSEP, JAMES (1799-1840)

Seventh son of John Prinsep, brother of William (q.v.). Assistant Assay Master, Calcutta Mint,1819; Assay Master, Benares Mint, 1820-30; Deputy Assay Master, Calcutta Mint, 1830; Assay Master, Calcutta Mint, 1832-38. A great scholar interested in chemistry, mineralogy, meteorology, numismatics and antiquities, he deciphered the Kharoshti and Brahmi scripts and was Secretary of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, 1832-38. He was a talented amateur artist and published ‘Benares illustrated, in a series of drawings’ in 1831-34. Prinsep's Ghat in Calcutta was built in his memory.
