PRINSEP, WILLIAM (1794-1874)
William Prinsep came of a family which served in India for several generations. Its history is related in Sir H.T. Prinsep, 'Three Generations in India, 1771-1904' (Mss Eur C97/1-3).
William was the fifth son of John Prinsep (1746-1830) and was a merchant in the Calcutta firm of Palmer & Company during the early years of the 19th century. Five of his brothers were also in India: George (died 1839), also in the House of Palmer & Company; Henry Thoby (1792-1878) of the Company's civil service; James (1799-1840) of the Company's civil service (q.v.); Thomas (1800-30) who was in charge of the survey of the Sunderbunds (Bengal), and another talented artist (q.v.); and Augustus (1801-30) who wrote a novel, ‘The Baboo’. After the failure of Palmer & Co William became a partner in Carr Tagore & Co. c.1835 and was a director of the Assam Tea Company. See also William Prinsep's Memoirs, Mss Eur D1160/1-3.

Devis (ff.53, 55), George Chinnery (f.43a). James Prinsep, Thomas Prinsep, John Luard, Welby Jackson, W.F. Hutchinson, and Charles D'Oyly.
Inscribed in ink and pencil with names of artists and subjects.
Water-colour, pencil, pen-and-ink and wash; size of volume: 12 by 8.75 ins.
