YULE, Sir HENRY (1820-1889)

Yule served in India with the Bengal Engineers from 1840 to 1862. He was first posted to the Khasi Hills, Assam, where he became interested in the customs and megaliths of the Khasis. In 1843 he was sent to the Punjab to work on the west Jumma canals. At the end of the year he took short leave to marry his cousin, Anna Maria White, daughter of General Martin White of the Bengal Army. They returned by the overland route in November 1843 to January 1844. From 1845 he worked with a group of brilliant young engineers in restoring and developing the old Mughal irrigation system in the N.W. Provinces. Work was interrupted by the first and second Sikh Wars (1845-46, 1848-49) in which he took part. In 1849 he spent a holiday in the Himalayas and in 1850 and 1851 took furlough in Scotland and France. Much of the time was spent, however, in lecturing to the Scottish Military Academy. After his return to India he became Deputy Consulting Engineer for Railways and visited Burma and Singapore. In 1855 he accompanied Phayre's embassy to the Court of Ava as secretary and wrote ‘A Narrative of the mission sent by the Governor-General of India to the court of Ava in 1855’ (London, 1858) which was illustrated with engravings from some of his own drawings. In 1855 he became Under-Secretary, Public Works Department, Government of India. During the Mutiny he was posted to Allahabad, but afterwards returned to the Secretariat as Secretary in the same department. From 1855 until his retirement in 1862 he was largely concerned with irrigation works and the development of roads and railways. In the course of his work he visited Indonesia.

Yule retired to Sicily in 1862 and lived in Palermo partly for the sake of his wife's health and partly in order to investigate the histories of old Italian missionaries and travellers in central Asia. During these years he published ‘Mirabilia descripta: the wonders of the east by Jordanus; Cathay and the way thither’; and’ The Book of Marco Polo.’ He returned to England after the death of his wife in 1875 and edited a number of books for the Hakluyt Society, becoming an authority on early travellers to India and central Asia. He is perhaps best known for his glossary of Anglo-Indian colloquial words and phrases,’ Hobson-Jobson’ (London, 1886).
