OLDFIELD, HENRY AMBROSE (1822-1871)

Indian Medical Service 1846-1868. Assistant Surgeon 1846, Surgeon 1859, Surgeon Major 1866. Oldfield was posted to Dum-Dum with the artillery in December 1846. At the beginning of 1847 he travelled up-country to Sabathu with the 18th European Regiment. In September 1847 he was posted with the 11th Calvalry to Nakodar (Punjab) and in February 1848 to Simla. Here he attended on Lord Gough, Commander-in-Chief. During the second Sikh War (1848-49) he temporarily joined the 13th Irregular Cavalry but was soon recalled to Simla. From December 1849 to March 1850 he served in Ambala and Wazirabad. In March 1850 he was posted to Nepal as Residency Surgeon and, apart from leave in 1856, remained there until 1863. During the Mutiny, he was appointed Honorary Assistant to the Resident. He married Margaret Alicia Prescot (q.v.) in 1856.

During his leisure hours Oldfield enjoyed outdoor sports and was particularly interested in sketching mountain scenery and architecture. After 1861, however, his eyesight deteriorated, and he trained a 'native artist' to copy his sketches and make drawings for him. After his death his family published his’ Sketches from Nipal’ (London, 1880), 2 vols., illustrated from his drawings, some of which are included in the present collection.

Fourth daughter of the Rev. William Henry Prescot, M.A., of Bradshaw Hall, Cheadle. Married Henry Oldfield (q.v.) in Stockport Parish Church, October 1856, and soon after sailed for India (and on to Nepal) with her husband. They had six children, three of whom Lilian, Philip (died 1861) and Edmund were born in Nepal
