TRAPAUD, ELISHA (1750-1828)
Madras Engineers 1778-1828. Captain 1784; Chief Engineer of Madras 1793. Served in the Mysore Wars. He was a good amateur actor, and the crowd at the Pantheon, Madras, used to cheer him and cry 'Crapaud, Crapaud' (Toad, Toad). In 1788 he published a book of uncoloured aquatints, ‘Twenty views of India’, made from drawings belonging to the same period as WD16, 17, 340-343.
---------------------
WD16-18; WD340-343
7 drawings. Purchased 16 October 1913.
---------------------
WD1410-1424; WD4122
16 drawings.
---------------------
WD1410-1424
14 drawings in S. India and 1 in England.
Purchased 2 January 1960.
Note: Although only two drawings are signed by Trapaud, all were purchased at the same time together with an engraving of the assault of Seringapatam inscribed: ‘Capt. E. Trapaud, my great grandfather on my Mother's side, was at the storming of Seringapatam -his great grandson - Willoughby Briggs has his medal- given the action. Nina Macaulay.’ It is not unreasonable to assume that all these sketches are by Trapaud.
---------------------
WD3894-3895
Two views of Prince of Wales Island (Penang) c.1786.
Purchased 1983 from a collection formerly belonging to descendants of the MacGregor brothers who went to India in the 1790s. Alexander, the youngest, became Commander-in-Chief and Member of Council on the Bencoolen establishment.
