The Maharajah's tour being a narrative of the royal progress made by His Highness Chamrajendra Wadeyar Bahadur, G.C.S.I., Maharajah of Mysore, through the western portion of his dominions, from November 1885 to January 1886. Is with the permission of His Highness the Maharajah, respectfully dedicated to him. Photographer(s): Ahrlé, Frederick
- Scope & Content:
-
Imprint: Bangalore: printed by Richmond F. Hayes, at the Daily Post and Examiner Press. 1887.
Red half-leather volume (rebound) measuring 207 x 274 mm, with letterpress description of tour, interspersed with 26 albumen prints mounted on card with letterpress captions and in some cases biographical notes. The preface to the work states that the account of the tour through the 'Western portions of his Dominions', 'was written by a native correspondent for the 'Bangalore Daily Post' and appeared in successive issues of that paper. As the tour was one which excited much public interest, it being the first made by the Maharajah after his accession to the throne, it has been deemed desirable to make a more permanent record of it by offering the narrative to the public in book form, with a few portraits of the principal persons who accompanied His Highness and illustrations of some of the beautiful scenery through which the Maharajah passed. The group at Koppa and a few other photos were taken by the Maharajah himself...The whole has had the benefit of being revised by an Officer who belonged to the former Mysore Commission and who is intimately acquainted with the people and the country. Such other details have been added as were wanted to complete the work, so that it might prove of utility to the tourist, as well as to the general reader...The narrative, as emanating from an intelligent Native gentleman and expressing his views of men and things, will, it is hoped, prove of special value to those who take an interest in the study of Native character and customs...Such tours together with the Representative Assemblies which are now held annually at Mysore are beneficial, in maintaining that touch which is so essentially needed between the governing and the governed. The results of the tour have been to expand the views of His Highness, to give him a fuller knowledge of the distant parts of his dominions, and to bring him in close relation with his people and the local officials...'
