Robert Crisp Hurley, Pictures of Canton (Hongkong: 1904). Photographer: Robert Crisp Hurley.
- Scope & Content:
-
Small landscape volume measuring 159 x 233 mm, paper-covered boards, decorated with title and dragon, containing 2 pp. of text (comprising a brief introduction by Hurley and a list of the photographs), followed by 16 views of Canton (Guangzhou), mounted on card one to a page (recto and verso), with letterpress captions printed beneath. Little information appears to be available regarding Hurley's career, beyond the fact that in 1898 he published a small volume of photographs of Hongkong, in a similar format to the present work, in celebration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, and issued a series of guide books to Canton and Hongkong from the mid-1890s up to 1920.
