Introduction: 'The influence of Sport—we use the word in its widest signification—on the character of the British race has been universally acknowledged, but seldom exaggerated. Of it comes that personal hardihood and love of daring and adventure which have tended in no slight degree to make our fighters and colonizers what they are. The educated Englishman is almost always a sportsman. He hunts, races, shoots or fishes; and if circumstances or taste do not incline him in either of these directions, he finds vent for his racial proclivities in yachting, rowing, cricket, polo, football, lawn tennis, cycling, or athletics in some form or other, differing in name, but all having a common basis and outcome—personal or physical excellence. There has never been a time when sport, in this catholic sense, has formed so important an element of English life ... To introduce to the general public—with the aid of actual photography—the 'personalities,' so to speak, of some of our more prominent and popular sportsmen, is the aim of the publication ...'
