The history of Windsor Great Park and Windsor Forest ... Illustrated with photographs by the Earl of Caithness and Mr. Bembridge, of Windsor. Photographer(s): Caithness (Earl of) or Bembridge
- Scope & Content:
-
Imprint: London: Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts, and Green. 1864.
Large folio, half-leather binding with green cloth boards, measuring 580 x 440 mm. royal coat of arms stamped in blind on upper board; xiv, pp. 52, two folding maps at end. The volume contains 20 albumen print views of trees in Windsor Great Park and Forest, mounted on card within tinted borders, with lithographed captions beneath each print. The authorship of the individual photographs is not specified, the author noting only in his introduction that 'the photographs of some of the trees were executed, at the request of Major-General Seymour, by the Earl of Caithness [James Sinclair (1821-1881), 14th Earl of Caithness]; and the series was completed by Mr. Bembridge, of Windsor.' The majority of the photographs appear to have been taken in the winter, presumably in order to illustrate the structure of the trees without concealing foliage. The only dated photograph, print 20, taken in 1862, is in a somewhat smaller format than the other prints and may be the work of a different photographer.
